Gah, so sorry. My parents weren't supportive either. Left an editor job at mag w a million readers. Thought I was clueless.

It's ok. I'm not sure I need their approval even though now I probably have it. Although not sure.

My mum cried when I told her I was getting a piece of paper that said "phd in psychology". She was that upset. She wanted it to say compsci.
-
It's so surreal I start to think it happened to somebody else. But yeah, not everybody gets supportive parents.

Dad had BS in botany and was wedded to my being landscape editor at magazine. Even though I didn't make enough to survive in a city.

The EIC was shocked when I quit for grad school "we were just going to give you a raise to $18k per year!!"
-
Ewww. I think I earn more than my parents combined BTW and I'm just a postdoc. Not that it matters ofc to me, but it really does to them.
-
I'm middle aged and still paying off student loans but totally worth it.

Yaaas to fitness!
-
My arms are probably even bigger now. My mum said I have to stop if my arm gets wider than my calf.

-
I'll just work on my calf then too.

-
That's such a weird thing to discourage: academic and fitness!
