Important: get your own private website. If you switch institutions your site will be wiped and often for other reasons out of your control.

TBH you need both. The Google ranking of my website for my name is because I got institutional profiles too. Although no re-use of text.

It's a good idea to link from your institutional page to your private domain. Indeed, increases page rank and keeping fresh even more.
