If you assign genders to the primitives you fail to model gender, IMHO.

Also another reason why female and male cannot be primitives is that being e.g., a builder, or liking typically male stuff should not
-
detract AT ALL how much a person feels like they are a gender. If a woman wants to like cars and have short hair and stereotypically "man"
-
activities this does not diminish how much she is a woman. If she says she is a woman, that's all there is to it, she's a woman.
-
Or similarly, like I said before, a trans woman is a woman, regardless of what private parts she has or hasn't got.
-
No part of any woman can be singled out and called anything but female/woman. A woman's fingernail is either no gender or female, any other
-
gender-related term to describe any part of her body or clothes is meaningless and factually wrong.

Same for some gay ppl who feel that gay ppl should behave 'normal' (meaning: as heteronormative as possble) if they expect to be 'accepted'.
-
Gay men have gender ids they created too, twink— bear. Gay women have femme — butch. Binary gender spectra are common in queer spaces too.
-
Always was quite uncomfortable with those, for myself. To get back to your earlier tweet:

For me more the reverse: I identify as woman, but my appearance/clothes are rather agender or androgenous.https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/899722889636831234 …

Throughout my life, ppl often confused about my gender. On one hand surprises me (bcse of contrast to identity), on other hand used to it.
-
In any case, re: feature space discussion: Think you right that all kinds of combinations possible without simple mapping to identity.

Concept of disidentification forced by dilemma between gender/preferred role is relevant here too. Obscure reference http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/13264826.2012.738237?src=recsys&journalCode=ratr20 …

As interdisciplry researchers recognize this: Depending on company, may identify differently (eg, psychologist, comp modeler, cogsci, etc.)?
