I don't think the 1st language deteriorates bec of the 2nd. We can lose proficiency in the one we use less because we have an alternative.

One of my two first languages has definitely deteriorated since I moved to UK. But yes, use would keep both in good shape, as you say.

I couldn't tell which is my first language because we learn 2-3 at one go back home. Moving to HK has actually improved two of these

I'd call them joint first. I had a first word in Greek and English as a baby.

I think it depends a lot if your a native bilingual (I'm from Galicia, in Spain, and I've learned both languages from the beggining)+

Exactly. There's a lot of bilingual abuse in children too, since eg immigrant children are bilingual.

I am bilingual from birth, but I'm certainly losing one due to having nobody to talk to.
