Inkscape — why!?
The whole thing barfs and I lose my work when trying to open another file that nonetheless was created using Inkscape.

Inkscape. Nightmare. But I still use it because it's pretty much the only thing we have on Linux.
-
Have you tried draw.io?
-
Can it cope with humongous files?
-
I never did anything very complicated there. It's useful for drawing things from scratch, but I'm not sure you can edit a PDF or SVG there.
-
So it's more of a suggestion for the future than a solution for your current issues. I feel your pain, I hate Inkscape

-
I'm not drawing anything from scratch. I'd use tikz for that. This is shapefiles and other GIS.
-
Sometimes I feel it would be easier to edit SVG as text than using Inkscape
I already went the TikZ way once, but now I use draw.io. -
It's a map! The files are huge.

Why not use .png in your latex? I agree, Inkscape sucks with PDF, but I use latex, and I've never had problems when I stick to svg and png.
-
So much to unpack here.
1, it needs to be zoom-in-able. It's very detailed. 2, I sometimes need to open PDFs in Inkscape regardless. -
I see, I guess your requirements are different than mine. It's a shame cause Inkscape is pretty good for academic figure-level work.

-
I'm still going to use it just not open the pdfs.
