But often profs have just one book in them, and #tenure leads to slacking / arbitrariness. Seems like security upon hire is better.

Does UK have expectation of indefinite employment upon hire, with "just cause" for removal? Or did it at one time?

It's a perm position if that's what you mean. But no more or less permanent than any other job.

On what basis can people be removed? Anything manipulable/arbitrary like teaching evals / observations (which can be maliciously cooked)?

Depending on the uni, yes, arbitrary things, can be used to make you move on.

Right, I see what you mean. It's not exactly like that, I think. But really I'm just a postdoc, you should ask profs in the UK system.
