Also I think a student prompting their supervisor to do work is actually out of line and can lead to worsening the relationship regardless.
That tweet you quoted Tim says the following: A student prompting their supervisor to do work (= telling their supervisor what to do)
-
-
can lead to (= has the possibility to lead to) worsening the relationship. Because it's true. It can do that.
-
And yes, it is often out of line to manage your supervisor.
-
To me, there is a distinction between managing them, and helping them manage you by providing reminders. May not sit well with some though.

When I send sth to a supervisor, I often write something like "It would be great it you could provide feedback by [date] because [reason]".
-
It doesn't feel like I'm imposing or trying to tell them their job, but opens the door for me to send polite reminders.
-
It's never your job to send polite reminders though. You shouldn't feel obliged to.
