I agree it's not the students "fault", but there's a lot of grey area between crap advisor and pretty good but busy/aloof one.

I agree very much. This training should be mandatory for PIs. But in the short run, it's a useful tool to teach students.

I think it should be easier for students to switch PIs and there should be less stigma about quitting/starting over

Yeah, its always really tough. I was in a similar situation and decided leaving is best, but I wish there were fewer of these situations
