There's a spectrum between one email to ask about feedback and managing your PI daily. One end of the spectrum can get you in trouble.

I'm just one anecdote, but I do appreciate/encourage my students to drive the car as much as they can. I increase feedback when needed.

I reward them for coming forward with reminders by being responsive and that has worked well so far. I perhaps should be more explicit.

That is why you're probably a really good PI. Not anything specific but this kind of openness and listening and proactivity.
