It's what this makes me feel (I am a phd student) if I am not allowed to remind my supervisors of very basic work requirements.

Sorry Tim, but do you understand the difference between "not allowed" and "not expected"? Cause we never said the former

Fair enough, my bad. But warning students that you might lose your job if you do does sound like that.

You might be asked to leave a lab if you constantly undermine your PI, yes.

There's a spectrum between one email to ask about feedback and managing your PI daily. One end of the spectrum can get you in trouble.

Yes, agree. But asking for timely feedback (especially with agreed upon deadlines) isn't, or shouldn't, be trouble.

That's why that part was in parentheses. The OT states after a month; that's a reasonable time for a reminder imo.https://twitter.com/ithinkwellHugh/status/897231527146344457 …

The point is: a supervisor should have communicated either with feedback or a timeline by then. If not, they're a bad supervisor

Yes, and also a student is not obliged to prompt their supervisor. Not all students feel so empowered. It can also be a bad habit to prompt.
