If student hasn't contacted them within that time (to prompt such a response) they need to work on their assertiveness, surely?

Absolutely; it's essential. It is (or should be) normal in any kind of subordinate-superior position. Normal part of worklife?
-
Not normal to do your boss's job. Let me put it this way, if you tried that in many labs I've worked in you'll get your role politely but
-
sturnely re-explained to you. If you keep at it, you might even get asked to leave. Seen it first hand enough times.
-
That's fucked up, imo.
-
Surely students have rights and supervisors are to be held to agreed upon expectations? I'm not cattle.
-
I have no idea what you're reading above which makes you think that I don't respect students' rights. I'm saying that supervisors should do
-
their job. What bit makes you think I'm calling a student cattle?
-
It's what this makes me feel (I am a phd student) if I am not allowed to remind my supervisors of very basic work requirements.
