In my opinion the expectation that a student should remind a PI is off. In the same way the expectation they should be friends is off.

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen or it's always bad. But it's bad to expect it. Not part of the default deal.

If PI wants students to remind them, it's the PI's obligation to tell the students that if they want to they can, but it's not their duty.
