I've realised a lot of people seem to think software development requires no skills apart from solitary equation solving & mental rotation.

Necessary but not sufficient, as they say in molecular biology (and, I assume, formal logic)

I'm not even sure they're all that necessary, at least not at above-avg levels and definitely not for every member of a s/w development team

I don't think they're that necessary, even for most scientific research software.

Well, at least not at present, where I get to farm out computations to existing linear algebra libraries!
