Am I right in thinking a university is penalized if a PhD student doesn't' finish in 4 years? Who by? And in what way?
I'm condemning illness as unpaid leave but sadly that's what phd students get.

If they can afford to take time off to be ill that is.
-
Well, I sadly know people who were/are so seriously ill (neurological illness) so they didn't have the choice. Their medical leave was
-
unpaid and it was extremely cruel.
-
I think through my research council funded PhD I'm entitled to 3 months paid sick leave...I *think*...
-
That's unusual. Nice.
-
Problem with being a PhD student (in UK at least) is you don't automatically get same rights as employees...
-
Because sadly you're not an employee. I was lucky enough to be.
