Not quite the same thing, but I remember a lot of my cohort early on doing experiments that were replications plus some new bits.

Mostly, though occasionally people would do a direct replication but then extend it to a new population or something.

I feel like direct replication is good start bc doesn't require much background knowledge, makes student think about how they'd follow-up

I agree! Plus, if you're replicating a robust finding, it is pretty straightforward to tell if there is an error in your analysis somewhere.

It was hard for me to figure things out when I was constantly asking "Did I do this wrong or is there something weird in the original?".
