Subjective view on conference talks: North-American (trained) speakers take presenting far more seriously as a skill, and it shows #iconNL

I dunno. Iv been to SFN and you see a lot of talks where they don't present everything, loads of data with no theory or clarity!

I agree. Often the work is greatly exaggerated and the important (boring) detail missing... (still there is a middle ground that is ideal)

NA training is longer, PhDs = longer, resulting in more professional graduates than equivalent in UK/EU in my experience. So talks polished.

This seems to be the case in my opinion with a lot of stuff. More money in universities (compare US endowments), more time spent doing PhD.

All these result in better trained, less naive graduates. Also don't forget in USA many drop out, in UK rare. So selection/survivor bias.

Americans are very obsessed with modesty, I died every time I had to say "restroom". 😇

In much of the former British empire (e.g., Canada, India) the standard term is still "washroom".

I quite like "washroom". It's fundamentally the same level of euphemism as "toilet" or "lavatory".

Even "bathroom" is better than "restroom", though. THERE IS NO COUCH IN THERE.
