I think it's also sexism too. There's so many cases of women being demoted that the variance has to be explained by someth to do w sexism.
it's never explicitly discussed. So women go into the toughest fields, and/or what they want to, because there is no guidance away from them

Out of 4 people from Cyprus in my undergrad of 100 people, 3 were women. Out of 100, 5 were women overall.

In my case (İstanbul Tech. University), women undergrads were ~ 40%. That's for mathematics and engineering sciences though.

Male dominated departments were civil engineering and mechanical engineering.
