Naturally, this works both ways. :)
It's a complex mix. Some part of it is driven by Cypriot (and related mentalities) basically saying "women suck at everything" which is
-
-
freeing. If I suck at everything then I can suck at what I like. In UK we have areas that women are supposed to b better at: English, Bio...
-
This results in predictable skew of women going into areas they are told they are better at. It's complex. Very complex.
-
In Cyprus the concept that women would be better at men at something other than housework is anathema, but also taken as such a given that
-
it's never explicitly discussed. So women go into the toughest fields, and/or what they want to, because there is no guidance away from them
-
— if you wanna be a mathematician as a woman it is the same as if you wanted to be a biologist.
-
Out of 4 people from Cyprus in my undergrad of 100 people, 3 were women. Out of 100, 5 were women overall.
-
In my case (İstanbul Tech. University), women undergrads were ~ 40%. That's for mathematics and engineering sciences though.
-
Male dominated departments were civil engineering and mechanical engineering.
