Unfortunately awareness doesn't help. The (lack of) design of the system is what permits this behaviour, so redesign is the only solution.

yes, but these stories are all too reasonable and illuminate the need for change - something people don't ack enough.

I think most people are at some level aware of problems in the system, so that if a better system became an easy option they'd switch easily

I don't see that in many of my conversations with junior or senior faculty.

I think being scooped is v complex. I don't think PhD students over-estimate but they do indeed not understand in many cases how it happens.

They think it happens by vaguely discussing your ideas or results with others. Usually this is not the vector in which such incidents occur.

How it happens is more like the examples of real incidents given above. That specific bad actors are on the prowl and purposefully scoop.

V much see your point here (and the follow-ons): in my mind the scoop threat fear is mostly about incidental/accidental

But you're absolutely right that the malice case is real. I wonder if there needs to be diff words for accidental vs. intentional cases?

What's accidental scooping? Because of you mean they just happened to be doing the same thing, well, that sadly cannot be avoided ever.

And since in this case they aren't bad actors they will probably want to work with you.
