This all being said, if you do know labs with such unethical tendencies: STAY THE FUCK AWAY and feel free to warn others. 100%.

Also if you are confident somebody in your lab is acting as a spy whether they realise it or not, again: stay away & maybe talk to your PI.

I have actually myself raised such issues quite a few times in various labs I've worked in. This can be done without use of dramatic "spy".

In other words, tactful explanation of why you are concerned works and usually is met with respect from others.
