I think being scooped is v complex. I don't think PhD students over-estimate but they do indeed not understand in many cases how it happens.

They think it happens by vaguely discussing your ideas or results with others. Usually this is not the vector in which such incidents occur.

How it happens is more like the examples of real incidents given above. That specific bad actors are on the prowl and purposefully scoop.

I think this is the fallacy, basically blaming the victim. As if it's your fault you got scooped for presenting a poster! No!

That is a really important point - it's not people letting their guard down, it's that some people are out to cheat however possible.

This is why nothing you do, absolutely nothing, is what caused you to get scooped. Basically you or your lab were a mark.

Preprints seriously deter and even directly prevent you from being scooped, but not 100%. These bad actors can get you if they really want.

The real solution is talking openly about it, using preprints and other open science tools, and generally accepting it's not victim's fault.

The current way ppl handle it is like stay inside with lights off and make your house look like a bush. Should be: have laws, enforce them.

I have actually myself raised such issues quite a few times in various labs I've worked in. This can be done without use of dramatic "spy".
