I have more and worse that I can't share, and have heard many more and *much* worse from friends around the world.

I know of cases (at least 2 100% verified, others less sure of but why not believe it?) where PIs have made PhD students in other labs their
-
spies so they can scoop or just generally steal ideas and ruin the other lab.
-
Such PIs will scoop you and your lab whether you discuss with others or not because they are going to act in bad faith to "get you".
-
I think this is the fallacy, basically blaming the victim. As if it's your fault you got scooped for presenting a poster! No!
-
This is like saying it's your fault you got burgled because you own a house. No!
-
That is a really important point - it's not people letting their guard down, it's that some people are out to cheat however possible.
-
This is why nothing you do, absolutely nothing, is what caused you to get scooped. Basically you or your lab were a mark.
-
Preprints seriously deter and even directly prevent you from being scooped, but not 100%. These bad actors can get you if they really want.

V much see your point here (and the follow-ons): in my mind the scoop threat fear is mostly about incidental/accidental
-
But you're absolutely right that the malice case is real. I wonder if there needs to be diff words for accidental vs. intentional cases?
-
What's accidental scooping? Because of you mean they just happened to be doing the same thing, well, that sadly cannot be avoided ever.
-
I think there's an in between though where they see an idea and do something similar which makes it harder to publish the first thing
-
I am not sure that's inadvertently scooping. That's malicious.
-
One thing to keep in mind in all such cases is the edge cases are indeed tough, worthy of debate, but the principal offense is clear.
-
Burglary is when somebody unbeknownst to you enters your house without permission and takes your belongings.
-
There are edge cases where your family or friend could trick you into letting them in to your house and then steal your stuff.
