"One trick I use to avoid status bias is to keep myself blind to the authors' identities" @siminevazire

I'm not sure if more paranoia in science is the way to go though. Double-blind will scare peer reviewers even more: what if it's some1 big?
-
This is literally the opposite of what URMs are afraid of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
Also I can find the ref if you want, but there was a study that found that bigshot publications had higher success rates when blinded
-
I'm not sure "more paranoia" is an apt description of blind reviews?
-
Surely it's very scary for ECRs if they are openly new and naive (ie their name is obviously of an unknown)?
-
Also I don't feel these pressures or stresses myself because of my personality in this specific thing, so it's good to listen to others.
-
But women or people with "foreign" names could easily be treated worse because of open review, you can imagine that right?
-
Nobody will be treated worse in open peer review, quite the opposite. Ask editors. Problem is, if there is one, with more leniency.

I keep myself blind during the review process by not remembering anyone's name
-
I've not reviewed anything, but this is 100% me
-
I actually try my best not to Google them and usually succeed. In fact don't think I've ever done that while doing the review.
-
But wouldn't that make sense actually? Comparing authors' previous work on the subject with the manuscript at hand improves review in a way.
-
But then you are opening yourself up to a whole bunch of implicit biases based on who they are.
-
If the previous work is relevant they would cite it? But Google them I would discover eg their culture and race etc
-
That's not relevant right?

Yeah have been following this. Seems there is dire need for comprehensive research also. PS may I send the letter?
-
Yes, to letter!

Perhaps journal editors should consider some positive discrimination towards young researchers.
