For stim control and design I can understand why a proper abstracted GUI is helpful. Writing a program for each task inc. changes of bugs
-
-
-
Not doing a human task — stimuli are for a neural network.
-
I have actually never run an experiment myself on a living thing.

-
INB4: machines are sentient. No.

-
I was going to say that I thought you just hurl natural images at a deep net and let the magic happen. What is all this stimulus "design"
-
Pixels and shit.

This is why the programming language wars are so futile. Noone really understands how other people like to work.
-
I respect others need other tools. 100% even Matlab if they need it. But I'd advise against that one in many cases.

-
Yea, I wouldn't go so far as to say that no tools are inferior to other tools. Just that it's really hard to support such assertions.
-
That's why I said "I hate" as opposed to someth more prescriptive, but yes, I can see how I might've come across as telling you what to do!
-
I found your post really useful, even if just to force me to fact-check my biases.
-
I said hate here too. I like being passionate I guess.
Also glad it was useful! -
Also FWIW I don't tell people what to do in meatspace, eg in lab, unless they ask for advice or I'm real worried about them.
-
So you restrict your advice to cases in which you can influence thousands, but spare the dozen? ;)

This honestly mystifies me. Why do people hate GUIs? Using the command line drives me crazy. It's like puritanical self-flagellation
-
So many people I've worked with look down on me for using a GUI for version control, but it's so much quicker and easier!
-
I don't look down on anybody — each to their own... But I've tried GUIs for version control and other stuff and I just can't.
-
As a general rule, if I can't find a GUI to do what I want I end up writing one! Like these professionals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkDD03yeLnU …
-
Fair enough! You probably help others a lot that way too!

-
Trust me, no one else would have any use for the things I make...
-
Oh
you don't know that! I've put like random stuff I use on github and people ended up using bits.
-
I'm crap at making things general purpose; my stuff is too kludgey and buggy to be of use to anyone but me. Plus it's mostly in Director!
