Why go for a noun that has inherent rendering? Why not something like: "leaders" "activists" "movers and shakers" "vanguard" etc?

i see that in a lot of phd students who permanently talk about their supervisor and what he thinks of them.
-
a hugely empowering thing is to internalise that your elders/supervisors/overlords/idols are: - flawed - lucky - not better than you
-
(not saying that's easy, but it's always true)
-
Yes, and to recall they are better in important ways. I.e., at telling you how to move onwards in career, etc etc. Assuming they are acting
-
in good faith, which should be your basic assumption anyway until proven otherwise.
-
Many people I have noticed doubt their supervisor in ways that are counter productive to getting work done. I have noticed this a lot.
-
They tend to do it because they are naive. This is one area your adviser is more experienced at.
-
Interesting - I basically never assume people are acting in good faith. I am deeply suspicious of authority as a matter of self defence.

definitely, i was stressed out about what they thought of me etc., but it's not about them as a person, more what they represent
