Why did nobody tell me the .prj can just be copy pasted from another .prj!
HOURS OF MADNESS TRYING TO DEBUG THIS.

1/ If you ever have the pleasure of using arcpy you'll find the spatial ref .tostring method and .prj file text look the same...
-
2/ But one uses ' and the other " and using the wrong one means it doesn't work.
-
I haven't had this pleasure but there is a (I think documented) big bug in geopandas which makes shapefiles .prj be 100% wrong wrong wrong.
-
Saved wrongly that is. No idea when it occurs exactly either as some shapefiles are saved just fine. Tried re projecting, manually setting
-
crs, geopandas is like "NO HAHA". So OK. Copy/paste it is.

GDAL command line testepsg good for different PRJ/WKT and PROJ.4 variants
-
But other formats better suited, shp (like GeoJSON) are not supposed to be in projected form. (Datum effectively not specified for shp)
