The term community is being used in so many different ways that it is confusing the dialogue, imo.

There are various kinds of community, on at least one spectrum, which have different characteristics.

So is open science a community in a very informal sense of the word? Sure!

Is it even remotely similar to a highly structured and organized community with shared norms, values, goals, and methods? No.
