It's complicated! Open science advocates are a community but we should go out of business when everyone practices what we preach. :)
-
I get your point. I basically agree too.

-
#OpenScience started as Free Software & then attracted people like Open Source. It mixes values (e.g. knowledge as commons) & common sense. -
Do you think it's a community?
-
It's a word. Each actor has its own definition. We started
@HackYourPhd to have a community questioning this. C.f. http://hackyourphd.org/en/category/openscience-log/ … -
Consensus on what something is and is not is not impossible.

Open science is not yet any of those, since it is in its infancy.
-
Not yet, so you think it will be? What do you think it is now?

Open is what science is supposed to be.

And does it constitute a community?
-
We should say so, although awfully far flung. Perhaps loosely federated communities, some per discipline, others profession, location, etc.
-
Seeing there is some controversy around this, I'd add that I wouldn't consider it a "club" or anything formal. An awareness raising mvmt…
-
Most of the controversy is relating to how I and others think we should call out bad actors. In this case a certified racist.

IMHO folks who want to take the route of abdicating responsibility for community building risk running into same problems as FOSS community
-
IMHO your opinion is correct.

Could the question be approached scientifically? Identify observable indicators for the existence of a community, for example.
-
Go for it!

s, undermining slightly the point. The reason it needs to be addressed = Kierkegaard claims to be in our movement.
