my interp (and I've heard it a fair bit over the years): open science comm quite unwelcoming in many ways. This is a recent example.

Yes, unwelcoming interacts intersectionally. Of course.

Stuart, I think implicit bias literature suggests that "targeting" need not happen explicitly; happens implicitly.

Yes, inclusivity is tricky. Observing dominant group members aggressive w/each other can signal risk for entering esp. if doubting belonging
