I've tried (not always succeeded) to focus on gen'l/struct'l issues, not specific people; be positive about small steps; do, not just preach

we are actively trying to figure out how to offer training opps in data science and open science to URM undergrads esp.

That's great but sometimes you need to tell individuals they aren't welcome if they're making entire groups of URMs feel unsafe & unwelcome

It's just like encouraging more women into STEM but at the same time letting known abusers & sexual harassers keep their jobs

agreed and good point. But I don't regard myself as open science police or (particularly) community leader. Seems arrogant to assume :)

This seems to be everyone's stance (who I've interacted with anyway), and it's clearly not working

It's everyone's job to call out bad behaviour.

More so senior people, more so people with energy and privilege.
