Not sure about there being shitty subreddits, or about shittiness getting downvoted in mainstream subreddits?
I used to be very active on reddit, so unless something has dramatically changed I don't buy that things that are bigoted get downvoted. 
I mainly hang out in science and politics subreddits and don't see much sexism or racism there, but could be I'm missing it elsewhere

There's tons of sexism in science (where I work) so why not in the science reddit? I mean there's no real place where there isn't.
Reddit, much like twitter, is not known for having very good policing of bigots.
