I really need to stop jumping around and find my 'thing'. It upsets me that I have no consistent thing that I do/know about.

I also second that doing an MSc and working as an RA is a good idea
-
RA definetely a good idea. It's quite difficult to get MSc funding, it might be a good middle ground to get experience before the PhD
-
Some 1+3s exist, which are pretty good ideas IMHO. I was lucky and could fund my MSc, but yeah RA is extremely good or lab managing.
-
Do they do lab manager positions in compsci? You get really good pay (way higher than PhD funding, so you can save) and you get to publish
-
if you play your cards right, are lucky, etc etc.
-
Also the question remains, do you actually want a career in science? It's great but it's not a lie that it's also extremely tough.

-
I want a career in the cutting edge and in theory. I also love teaching. So academia seemed good.

I think doing MSc might give you some space to think about how you want to progress later + you get some "starter skills" if you go for PhD
-
publications even, though that's another issue
-
The issue with doing an MSc first is that I think I might be bored with it. Obvs, depends on the course.
-
Also, funding. My uni fund PhDs, I'm not sure they fund Masters.
-
Yeah I had the same thing - I found a funded PhD in London but I was also accepted to MSc in Edinburgh, not funded tho. No choice really
-
When you say bored do you mean you might not like the theme? What makes you think PhD won't get boring?
-
Also are you ruling out other unis? Many unis do 1+3 which implies MSc and PhD fully funded.
