I really need to stop jumping around and find my 'thing'. It upsets me that I have no consistent thing that I do/know about.

I certainly can focus on something for an extended period. I'm not sure what it is though! But yeah, I don't really know.

If I may join and give my opinion - I went straight to PhD and I often wish I would have done MSc first. It was a Q of funding though
-
Yeah, that's a very common theme I hear from people either directly or indirectly. MSc was good at helping me understand certain things.
-
I also second that doing an MSc and working as an RA is a good idea
-
RA definetely a good idea. It's quite difficult to get MSc funding, it might be a good middle ground to get experience before the PhD
-
Some 1+3s exist, which are pretty good ideas IMHO. I was lucky and could fund my MSc, but yeah RA is extremely good or lab managing.
-
Do they do lab manager positions in compsci? You get really good pay (way higher than PhD funding, so you can save) and you get to publish
-
if you play your cards right, are lucky, etc etc.
-
Also the question remains, do you actually want a career in science? It's great but it's not a lie that it's also extremely tough.

My DMs are open to you any time if you want to discuss it. I'm on my 2nd postdoc now so I have *some* experience with working/living in sci.
