"intellectual pursuit disconnected from the practical concerns of everyday life". Sounds like good approach for science breakthroughs to me

I think perhaps other scientists aren't too. I am not going to speak for everybody. But to me ivory tower is anti-intellectualism.

The phrase is typical of anti-expert agenda of the right wing. Especially seen during brexit propaganda, climate denial, etc.

That's fair, but also worth considering the venue of the talk and the target audience, was presented at a research conference to academics
-
But you also tweeted it?
-
I shared it as a talk presented at a conference, and all of the slides are there to be viewed--not just the title slide
-
It can be viewed as an acceptance that academics are in an ivory tower. But you perhaps think we are. So I guess that's our disagreement?
-
I don't think all academics are in an ivory tower, but there is a spectrum there--and I suggest some ways/benefits of being less siloed
-
That's great. And I probably would agree with much of your talk, but I can't agree with using a weaponsised, IMHO, phrase, esp prominently.

That's good...did you feel we were accusing you of it?
-
No. Not at all. I feel, like I keep repeating, that it's a dog whistle.
