No, I never define or discuss the ivory tower as a term; talk wasn't really long enough for that

I used term to mean trad view of academia in unis and publications, and that we should go beyond that and value social media and outreach

I generally think of the term in-line with the 'modern usage' definition https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivory_tower …

So "unworldly dreamer"? This is exactly what I take issue with, as I said. Expert bashing based on outdated equivocation. 🙁

"intellectual pursuit disconnected from the practical concerns of everyday life". Sounds like good approach for science breakthroughs to me

I'm very concerned with everyday life tho. Phd students are too. As are more senior academics. So many examples of academics being useful.

Just by virtue of being active on Twitter you are already not siloed (is that a word??) Which was his point.

I don't think the reason I'm not siloed is because I'm active on twitter. And I don't agree that if I didn't use social media I'm siloed.

This brings me back to using "Ivory tower" to mean academic life. I disagree with this phrase. I think it's not representative of our work.

The phrase is typical of anti-expert agenda of the right wing. Especially seen during brexit propaganda, climate denial, etc.
