Also starting to have a wee look around for places I can go/people I can work with, but supervisor not convinced that's productive now

And supervisor is being supportive, it's just that I don't have publications yet (but soon I will)

I had that position. Was close 2nd choice for a postdoc at Cambridge.... at the time had 0 publications... but several submitted.

It's annoying; science is a slow-burn, but jobs by publication say otherwise

PIs (I dunno if you recall/saw prev thread) who say they don't hire PhDs without any pubs AS A HARD RULE are ppl you don't wanna work with.

Pubs are great and I super hope you get them before end of your PhD but they aren't everything.

My thesis is by publication so I can't finish without them. But I should be able to submit current one soon & next analysis will be faster

this is my problem of thesis by publication.... AND having a hard time limit. Your PhD lies in some unrelated journal editor's hands.

Ideally I would've had a publication in year 1 but I spent almost an entire year with a protocol that didn't work

This is why PhD supervisor kind of harmed me, 5 years with no pubs even though so much hard work: ouch.
