Final year is pretty tough. You are doing your best science, but have to sort out post-PhD plan. Prioritising, planning, and having support

Are key. I was riding in the seat of my pants last year. Only got job offers in month of PhD funding.

Also starting to have a wee look around for places I can go/people I can work with, but supervisor not convinced that's productive now

And supervisor is being supportive, it's just that I don't have publications yet (but soon I will)

I had that position. Was close 2nd choice for a postdoc at Cambridge.... at the time had 0 publications... but several submitted.

PIs (I dunno if you recall/saw prev thread) who say they don't hire PhDs without any pubs AS A HARD RULE are ppl you don't wanna work with.

I'd agree! Extra context for my prev comment. I was 2nd choice with 0 publications. Guy who got it has 2 years postdoc + 14 pubs.

IMHO a PI should value you based on skills you have and the eagerness you show to learn new ones. Skills include but not limited to pubs.
