It’s about what gets you a job and a rep - I imagine for you it’s mostly articles and code, in output terms.
This is yet another reason why I refuse to work for a company full-time ever.

I think in the UK an organisation can't employ people without being a company. Do you have a specific kind of company in mind?

nothing against that per se just for me I like working with my partner and in a lab/publishing etc setting unlikely to find this in NGO
