I think I'm OK for now with all the links I've been given — but what I need ideally is to read in shapefiles and GeoJSONs and display them

..2/ if you do not need to manipulate the shapefiles, you should probs convert the Geojson file to Topojson. allows reduction in file size

Thanks for the tip, currently doing OK with geoJSON although I have noticed the huge file size!

ok no worries. just to elaborate conversion to Topojson results in reduction by approx 85%
