The thing is I wish I was previously in labs that helped me publish. So while I agree, I was never properly guided towards pubs. So perhaps

unhealthy practises exist regardless and pressure to publish is not actually properly utilised to help students.

Currently, I'm extremely lucky to be in a lab where we all get to publish if we do the work.

I have spent years working my butt off for nothing in return. I value pubs. I just don't value them uber alles.

That is to say, my position is way more nuanced than "pubs are the most important thing". I'm sure others is too just 140 chars = limiting.
