I think ratio is irrelevant. I'd mostly be evaluating first author stuff in a trainee because writing papers is so important/difficult

Please be aware that some senior authors don't allow their junior colleagues to write the paper . . . . !

Can only go by my own experience but the only reason I'd not let a trainee write the paper is because I didn't think they could

I get more 'credit' at this level by being last author than first author - I don't want to write if I can avoid it

Depends how much work you're prepared to put into knocking mss into shape! Or how secure you feel about yr rep ;-) But yes - you'd think so!

I guess though in terms of how I'd evaluate the trainee, they 'why' of 'why no first author pubs' is not something I'd try to quantify...

If you have a mentee who can't write or who you don't trust to write, something v wrong is up. It's sadly common in places I've studied.

Hardest skill and the most difficult to teach though, right? As you say, a common issue but not obvious to fix

Yes, exactly. These examples didn't even try though. I know from 1st 2nd and 3rd hand experience that such PIs who don't try exist.

There's a huge difference between this is tough but the student needs to try and essentially never mentoring or even trying to teach them.

I'm basically saying that cos I you're a good PI/advisor doesn't mean others even come close. I've had terrible experiences and nothing to
