Self reported preferred length might be wrong and not what people actually want though. So bear in mind it might not even be a guideline.

Not really. It depends on the question. If it's how many papers have you published, it's obviously more likely to be realistic.

And yes, you do need self-report if you wonder how many papers your tweeps/readers have published/how far in their careers they are.
