Git is a firehose - features upon features, many more suited for huge software teams. Also, GUIs aren't necessarily the devil - for my RAs,

if they've never been in the command line they use GitHub desktop 2 start - build confidence in the lab 1st then give them more power :)

yes, they are all already aware of/using the GUI just not effectively and not for their code — so since they are CLI users it's only logical
