It's identical to outside academia pretty much.
I'm not in an ivory tower because I have slightly more job security than other postdocs. There are untouchables, but certainly not me.

I think use of ivory tower is one of those anti expert slogans that's 90% untrue.

Most academics I interact with apply their work outside academia as much as they can.

i think the ivory tower perception is where senior academics develop sense of intellectual superiority and dismiss anyone junior or outside

Yeah, but I think it's rarer within certain disciplines than others.

defo. I've seen it a fair bit in Cambridge / plant sciences but also many very open and un-snobbish senior ppl who will discuss anything
