IRL a lot of people I know get super upset about discussing differences of opinion, see challenging ideas as attacking the person

Yeah, this is why I started this thread. I think a certain type of people would rather unfollow me than discuss.

Also IRL and online people have trouble disagreeing politely. So sometimes they really are attacking the person!

ya true. Do you find ppl in academia can't have debates? Mostly it's my family and non-academic friends who get upset / personal.

interesting! one of my favourite things about academia was the freedom to discuss ideas without it turning personal instantly
