On most scientific issues, even if I turbo disagree with somebody, I still often continue liking them as a person. Sometimes even more so.

IRL a lot of people I know get super upset about discussing differences of opinion, see challenging ideas as attacking the person

I think people think of their ideas as their own "creations", which comes with a sense of possession or personal attachment. Which is wrong.

also I think some people form their sense of identity around strong opinions, so to them attacking some ideas *is* attacking them

it's often in these cases I think that it turns to actual personal attacks

The cases I've seen involve an amount of deep resentment of how well the other person's ideas and career are compared to the attacker.
