On most scientific issues, even if I turbo disagree with somebody, I still often continue liking them as a person. Sometimes even more so.

It doesn't inherently bother me, as I guess that's life. But for most science things I don't care if we disagree.

IRL a lot of people I know get super upset about discussing differences of opinion, see challenging ideas as attacking the person

I think people think of their ideas as their own "creations", which comes with a sense of possession or personal attachment. Which is wrong.

Yeah, but others also literally attack the person and not the idea. It's all tough.

I think the saddest thing I've witnessed is people literally verbally attacking another without even reference to *any* idea what so ever.
