Ouch. I'm unlikely to be 1st author in a journal like that anytime soon. But I'm sure there's others. Maybe I'll be lucky and things change

You can also go from pdf to docx via Adobe Acrobat Pro, but its not foolproof. I've found markdown a sensible solution.
