OK... I was thinking of solution for now. If you can convince them to accept HTML, why not Markdown? But either way — not a solution for me.

huh? markdown is fab for writing docs. Pandoc converts .md to .pdf (via pdflatex) or to .docx to satisfy publishers https://kieranhealy.org/blog/archives/2014/01/23/plain-text/ …

Ok, I get the gist. I like markdown for readme files. And, yes, I mostly code at work. I haven't uses md for a manuscript but others do.

And yes, my website is mostly written in HTML. There are some md files. But mostly HTML so I do take your point.
