I've worked on some open source stuff in this area - what nvivo does is super complex and hard to achieve

I’ve not managed to find anything so far, no. But Nvivo is also shit. It crashes, it doesn’t autosave, resource hog...

there are some new technologies that might enable building a good open thing - pdf.js for example. But it's ~ a year's work
